Artist Bio

Hi! I'm Casey, an artist on a journey inspired by the intricate tapestry of life. Born and raised under the hot Florida sun, I've traded those sandy shores for the serene mountains of Pennsylvania, where I now call home.

I began life in a frenzied pursuit of knowledge about the world around me. As a child, I spent countless hours wandering streets, parks, and public places in search of insects and lizards. My wandering transformed into investigation as I aged. I wanted to understand more about life, nature, and animals in particular. Thus, I embarked on an adventure in academia, where I earned a Master’s of Science in Biology. However, life had its own plans for me. During graduate school, I encountered a challenging twist when a debilitating autoimmune condition surfaced, prompting me to reconsider my path.

Embracing change, I made the decision to bid farewell to the scientific world and instead start a new chapter as a wildlife artist. I left a life by the sea to live amongst the ancient and beautiful Appalachian mountains, where I find solace and purpose on my small homestead.

Drawing from my background in Biology, I use my art to tell stories about the flora and fauna I love, and to celebrate the natural world. Inspired by historical biological illustration, I enjoy contrasting this scientific rigidity with bold, emotion-evoking, and often abstract backdrops. I further explore contrast by employing a dialog between inverse ideas: invisibility and visibility, strength and fragility, life and death. It is my hope that my work inspires in viewers the same awe for life no matter the size that I feel, and to bring awareness to the ongoing destruction of global biodiversity.

Inspired by the path I have traveled, I chose the name “Samaran Selkie” for my artistic journey; “Samara” in reference to the seeds of the abundant maple trees of my new home, and “Selkie” defined as a mythical creature that resembles a seal in the water but assumes human form on land, as a nod to my upbringing by the ocean. Thank you for visiting, and I hope my creations resonate with the adventurer and nature enthusiast in you!
